The story of The Crescent Moon
The Crescent Moon is the thin silver smile in the night sky — and the smile is not a way of describing him: the curve of the crescent IS his smile, silvery-white, never yellow, with his eyes as two or three little stars twinkling just above. He is the quietest kind of character there is: he never speaks, he barely moves, and he owns the moment in every night when the letting-go begins. When the lights go low — when the sleepy bus rolls home and the little amber windows dim one by one — he is the one watching over it from outside, gently, all the way to the last window. His own goodnight is the best in the sky: he spins slowly, dimming the stars around him one by one, and then winks his own star-eyes out, last of all. The sky keeps him up so the dark is never empty. That has always been the arrangement.
