The story of The Moonlit Hollow
The Moonlit Hollow is the first place in Sleepland — the original, the one the others are weathers of. A soft dip of plump moss mounds in deep blues and lilacs, a moss bed at its centre, fireflies drifting, small five-point stars overhead, and above it all the Crescent Moon with his kind sleeping face, glowing gently, never fully waking, because this is his hollow and there has never once been a reason to. Nothing in the hollow travels anywhere. Nothing changes except the weather — on other nights this same dip fills with rain, or snow, or lifts into cloud — and whoever is sleepiest tonight gets the moss bed: Tardy one night, a zebra the next, a giraffe after that. The place never minds who. It holds perfectly still, the way a snow globe holds still between shakes, and it does its one job, which is to be exactly where you left it.
