Stop 2 on the route

The Sleepy Springs

Where the water begins, coming out of the ground. It goes to sleep when the water stops rising and only shines.

The story of The Sleepy Springs

Everything in this world flows downhill from here. The Sleepy Springs are the source — a wide, warm, open place where the water first comes up out of the ground and steps down over broad mossy ledges in ribbon after ribbon, three or four gentle tiers of it, into a broad pool of pale turquoise. At the front the pool shelves into a wide flat shallow only a few inches deep — warm, calm, exactly deep enough to float on your back in — and soft steam drifts off the surface into the evening. Where the waterfall further down is tall and hidden, the Springs are wide and open: this is the unhurried start of everything, and the stream that slips away over the lowest ledge is the beginning of the longest, slowest, sleepiest road there is. Every night ever spent in this world began, if you follow the water back far enough, right here.

Stories from The Sleepy Springs

Nothing from here has been published yet. The Sleepy Springs is still being filmed — the honest kind of gap, like the route’s “resident owed”.
