The story of The Starlit Shore
The Starlit Shore is where Sleepland keeps its second sky. The moss mounds run right down to the edge of a wide, still water so dark and so glassy that every star has a twin in it, and the Crescent Moon — who hangs above every corner of Sleepland with his eyes gently closed — is doubled too: one moon above the water, one moon in it, both of them asleep. That is the whole enchantment of the place. Everywhere else in the world you look up at the night. Here the night is above you and below you at once, and lying on the shore between the two of them is about the most surrounded by bedtime a small creature can ever be. Nothing arrives here and nothing leaves. The mist drifts a little over the water, the stars hold still, and both moons go on sleeping.
