The story of Tardy Cloud

The Tardy Cloud is furniture that loves you. He has no arms and no legs and no hurry; he is a big soft plump shape of cream-white lobes drifting slowly over Cloud Meadow, endlessly patient, and the easiest thing in the entire world to fall asleep on. That is his whole story, and he would not thank you for a bigger one. Where the Tardy Sun wakes children and the Tardy Moon watches over them sleeping, the Cloud is the one who carries them there — the drift between the day and the night, the slow ride you do not have to hold on for. Watch him cross the sky and your eyes do the following, and following, done slowly enough, becomes closing. He never rains on anybody’s parade, or on anything else — and if ever he does rain, it is gentle, and brief, and never because of how anyone is feeling. The sky in this world is not moody. It is just sleepy.
