The story of The Cloud Meadow
The Cloud Meadow is the only place in the whole world with no ground. It is the hollow’s dreaming weather: plump rounded clouds stacked high in the night sky like soft meadows, with tufts of deep green moss and tiny flowers growing along their tops and nothing at all underneath but more night. Every other place you walk to. This one you drift to — it is where the Tardy Cloud lives, the great slow patient one, and being carried there half-asleep is most of how anyone arrives. Nothing about it is quite sensible and nothing about it needs to be: it is the one place in Sleepland that reads as a dream rather than a place, which is exactly what it is for. It is where the night keeps its softest furniture, one storey up from everywhere.
