The story of The Whispering Willow
There are willows at every water in this world — every stream, every pool, every shore has one leaning out over it, trailing its long curtains of soft grey-green almost down to the surface. But only one of them has a face, and she is the Whispering Willow. She has leaned over her slow water for so long that every single line of her droops — she is the only tree whose natural shape was already the mood of the whole night — and under her hanging curtain there is a room: a private, shaded pocket of mossy bank where anyone can come and be quiet. That is what she is for. She cannot move, cannot follow, cannot leave, and that is her whole comfort: she is simply there, every time you come back. Shhhhh, she says, in a whisper you lean in for. Go to sleep now. Characters come to her. She has never once gone to them.
