The story of The Snoozy Stream
The Snoozy Stream is the slowest water in the world, and it is crossed in exactly seven steps. Seven round cream stepping stones make the path over it — the same seven who grin their one shared grin all day and go out, one by one, at night — and a great willow leans from the near bank, trailing her curtains of soft sage almost down to the surface. A mossy fallen log lies right across the water further along, tall dark reeds stand at the edges, and the stream itself slides by clear and dark and entirely unhurried, always in the same direction, carrying the night along with it. This is the stretch of the route where walking beside the water becomes the same thing as being carried by it — you follow the stream, the stream follows the route, and nobody involved is in any kind of hurry at all.
