The story of Zzz Zebra
Most zebras are born with stripes. Zzz Zebra was born with letters. Down his neck and along his flank his markings are soft, rounded, unmistakable Z’s — clustered on his side so they read, plain as anything, as the word every sleeping creature in every comic ever drawn has floating over its head: ZZZ. It is the luckiest coat in the world, because Z is the only letter where the letter, the animal and the sound of sleep are all the same thing. A toddler already makes the zzz sound when they pretend to sleep — so when Zzz Zebra dozes off, which is often, any child watching can join in, and joining in is the whole game. He is calm, dozy and content, one of Tardy’s sleepy friends, and he never has to do anything to teach his letter. He simply stands there, gently, being it.
