The Peaceful Plains

Long grey-green grass, and one slow wave travelling through it.

The story of The Peaceful Plains

The Peaceful Plains are the last green thing before the gold. That is the whole reason they are a separate place from the savannah next door: plains are grazing country, soft and damp underfoot and cooler, and a savannah is dry. Colour is how anybody knows they have moved on, and in a world with no cuts in it, colour has to do the job a cut would otherwise do. It is long soft grey-green grass to a low straight horizon, and away in the far distance, very small, the savannah’s single acacia — the next place, visible from this one. Above it the sky is wide and cooling and holds the first of the Sleepy Lights. And it has the best motion in the world, which costs nothing: one slow wave travelling through the grass, one side of the picture to the other, and gone. Nothing else moves at all. It is a breath you can see the shape of. It is deliberately the same gesture as the wind in the Hush, because they are neighbours and neighbours should rhyme. This is Zzz Zebra’s country. Zi Lion crosses it on his way to the water, which is a different thing from living here, and nobody minds either way.

Stories from The Peaceful Plains

Nothing from here has been published yet. The Peaceful Plains is still being filmed — the honest kind of gap, like the route’s “resident owed”.
