The story of Lair Bear’s Cave
The Lair is the warmest place in the world, and that is not a boast — it is a job. Every outdoor place in this world is cool: mauve stone, teal water, navy sky. The Lair is the one place lit by fire. It is a den hollowed inside an old tree, honey-coloured timber curving into a low domed ceiling, with a small fire burning in an arched stone hearth, shelves of round cream pots, and — in the middle of the floor — a big braided rug heaped with plump cushions in coral and sage and pale blue. That rug is the point of the entire room. The Lair Bear’s great art is the Snug — the ancient bear knowledge of a warm dark place — and this is the Snug, built: no sky, no weather, no distance, just a round doorway out to the dark that you are on the correct side of. It is where you go when what you need is to be held by a room.
