The story of The Lair Bear
The Lair Bear is an actual bear — the only one in Tardy’s inner circle — four times Tardy’s height and a great deal wider, rust-copper-brown with a huge pale belly, permanently unbothered, moving slowly and heavily because there has never once been a reason not to. He lives in the Lair, which is the warmest, darkest, most comfortable cave in the world, and his technique is named after it: the Snug — the ancient bear art of a warm dark place, practised by bears every winter since winters began. But his real gift needs no cave at all. The Lair Bear’s yawns are famously contagious. He yawns the way a landslide starts — slowly, hugely, unstoppably — and one big Lair Bear yawn rolls through a room like weather, catching everyone in it, including, every single time, whoever is watching. Try it. You will yawn before he is finished. Everybody does.
