The story of Chief Mindfulness
Chief Mindfulness is the oldest bear in the world, and he loves feathers. Not to wear — to hold.
He carries one single long soft pale feather between the fingers of one hand, with a few small downy ones tucked into the cord at his chest, and if you want to know why, you only have to drop one. A falling feather cannot be hurried.
It drifts, it turns over, it takes forever to land — it is the Sleep Ladder performed by an object — and a feather is, after all, what a pillow is made of. His are Sleep Feathers, and they have their own quiet magic: when one drops, somebody, somewhere, drifts off.
He teaches in Mindful Meadows, slowly, under his pale grey eyebrows — the eyebrows are what make him old and kind — and his lessons are all real ones, taught gently and properly, one raisin, one breath, one falling feather at a time.
