The story of Si Esta
Si Esta is the afternoon sleeper, and she takes the afternoon sleep entirely seriously — it is not a smaller bedtime, it is its own art, with its own hour and its own equipment. Hers is one object: a wide, soft, floppy hat in pale worn straw, tipped down low. A hat tipped down over the eyes is the siesta — the single most recognisable sleep picture in the world, needing no translation anywhere — and her name works the same way: you read Si Esta, but what you hear, said slowly out loud, is the nap itself. The brim is soft on purpose. Everything in this world sags as the night comes down, and a soft brim can droop further, rung by rung, until at the very deepest point Si Esta is the only character in the cast with no visible eyes at all — just a hat brim and a perfectly still body. She has gone the furthest of anyone. And you cannot see her go.
