The story of The Cat Nap

The Cat Nap is the world’s authority on the short sleep. Not the long night — the nap: the small, perfect, deliberate sleep, taken curled, anywhere, at exactly the right moment, which is a thing cats settled thousands of years ago and have never seen any reason to revisit. Her masterclass is the curl itself — nose to tail, one smooth spiral, the warmest shape an animal can make — and her soundtrack is the purr, which the books have always written with extra r’s, purrrr, because that is how it actually sounds: long, rolled, and slower every minute. At the Sleepy Fire she is never down in the ring with the others. She is up in the tree above it, curled on a branch in the dark with just her teal-green eyes showing — aloof and protective in exactly equal measure, keeping her own kind of watch. The bell on her collar gives one small tinkle as her eyes close. That is the whole announcement. A nap, properly taken, needs no more.
