The story of The Zzzzz Tree
Everything in this world that sleeps makes Z’s — and every one of those Z’s comes, in the end, from this tree. The Zzzzz Tree stands on the edge of the Sleepy Forest, ancient and wide and fast asleep, and it has been asleep for over thirty years. Its boughs are Z-shaped — great dark zig-zag branches making the letter against the sky — and it sheds soft pale Z’s the way other trees shed leaves: constantly, effortlessly, without meaning to, little misty Z’s drifting up and away all night long. It is the tree Auntie Dozer chose to sleep beside, and the tree Tardy walked further and further into the forest to find, before lying down on the lovely soft green moss beneath its branches. It never speaks. It only breathes. And its eyes have never once been open — not in any story, not for anyone — which is exactly why everybody watches.
