The story of Little Kip
Every Kip is named after a kind of sleep — that is the family rule, and it is why the family can only ever grow one nap at a time. Little Kip is the smallest of the three and the best of all of them, because koalas sleep eighteen to twenty-two hours a day, every single day, which makes them the only animals alive who out-sleep a water bear day in, day out. The Kips kip out — under the sky, by the Sleepy Fire, which is why she carries her one thing everywhere: a small blanket roll strapped across her back, so that anywhere she happens to be is already nearly a bed. She is the current champion of the Sleep Off. Auntie Dozer holds the original title, and holds it forever — thirty years in one go is not a record you break — but nobody, nobody, sleeps as reliably as Little Kip. And when the fire is low, the family makes its sound, slow and falling: koa… la… la… la.
