The story of Timber

Timber came down a long time ago, on a still afternoon in the Sleepy Forest, and he has been lying there ever since, settling deeper and deeper into the moss, year after year after year. That is where the grumble began — nobody ever asks ME, he says, low and slow and always whispered, and because he says it every night in the same worn-out order, it has become one of the softest sounds in the forest. And here is the thing about his name. Timber is the one word in English that means a fall is already happening — nobody shouts it at a tree, it is only ever an observation, called out to everyone else. But Timber himself is already down. He fell long ago. So when you whisper it to him — and it is whispered, never shouted — nothing falls. He just closes his eyes.
