The story of The Teacher
The Teacher keeps the daytime end of the World of Tardy — the classroom in the meadows where the animals go to school, which is exactly as chaotic as a classroom of zebras, lions, iguanas and one very small water bear sounds, and she would not have it any other way. Golden blonde hair, a purple jumper with a small white collar, endless patience: she is the only person in this world whose job is waking minds up rather than settling them down. But she owns one bedtime ritual all the same, and it is the schoolday’s own: the ending. Everything put away — every crayon in its tin, every book on its shelf, slowly, properly, no rushing — and then, when the room is quiet and the light is long, one last story before home time. Every child in the world knows that feeling: the tidy room, the low sun, the story that means the day is folding itself up. She teaches it every single afternoon. It is the first rung of every ladder.
