The story of Cata Pillar
Cata Pillar is the school run. Not a passenger on it — she IS it: long and soft and yellow-green, segment after cheerful segment, and when school ends in Moss Land the little ones climb on and ride her home. Her eyes are the biggest thing about her — enormous, delighted, taking in everything — and they are open for every minute of the ride, because somebody has to see the whole journey, and it is going to be her. The ride itself is the wind-down. A caterpillar travels at exactly one speed, and it is the right one: the rocking, rippling, segment-by-segment amble that no traffic can hurry, while the chatter behind her gets sleepier stop by stop. One day — everyone knows this about caterpillars, and nobody in Moss Land ever mentions it — she will wrap up warm and have the longest sleep of her life, and wake up with wings. She is in no hurry. Nothing about her has ever been in a hurry. That is the entire service she provides.
