The story of The Dream Dog
Here is the thing about the Dream Dog, and every child works it out before any grown-up bothers to explain it: however far you go, he is already there. Asleep. Curled up on the log in the Sleepy Forest before anyone reaches the Sleepy Forest. On a warm rock at the Dreaming Pools. On the wet sand at the Big Shush, where the sea is only a sound. Nobody knows how he does it and nobody has ever asked, because the answer is obvious if you have ever watched a dog dream — the twitching paws, the muffled woof, the eyes going under the lids. He is not walking there. He is getting there the way things get anywhere in a dream, which is to say he is simply already in it. Look for the cinnamon patch over his left eye and the ring of tiny dots on his snout — Tardy’s own mark, on a dog — and you will find him in every single place, fast asleep, utterly content, one step ahead of everybody.
