The story of Snakey Jakey
Snakey Jakey is proof that a snake can be the least frightening creature in a room. Bright leaf-green, blunt-nosed, banded in soft rings, with two enormous round friendly eyes and a small tasselled scarf at his neck, Jakey is the one who sits at the table and laughs at everyone’s jokes — gentle, comical, and completely uninterested in being dramatic about anything. He likes a small life. One good letter in the alphabet, one seat at the school table, one cosy scarf: enough. And at bedtime his smallness becomes his gift, because a snake settling down is barely a movement at all — he wraps the scarf a little tighter, coils himself one turn snugger, and lets his voice slide down into the softest sound his shape can make: a long, low sss-shhh. Half his name, half a hush. It is the quietest goodnight in Moss Land, from the fellow who never needed to be anything bigger than cosy.
