The story of Cousin Dayzee
Cousin Dayzee is not sleepy. That is the whole thing about her. She is cheerful and sunny and busy from the moment the day starts, out in the bright part of the world where the letters live, always halfway through something and usually already onto the next one. Her method is that she does not have one. What she has is a hat. It is a wide yellow floppy sun hat with a band of white daisies round the brim, and it is a great deal more honest about the time of day than she is. It starts up and open. Then it tips. Then the brim comes down over her eyes, and she carries on regardless for a while, which is the funny part. Then it slides. And then it is on the ground beside her, daisies still showing, and so is she. Nobody ever tells her to stop. Nobody has to. Her hat gets sleepy before she does, and it takes her with it, and a child watching a hat go down by degrees is a child going down by the same degrees without having noticed they agreed to anything. She steers, too. There is a ship’s wheel in her keeping and she is very good with it, and that is a story for a different night.
