The story of The Stepping Stones
The Stepping Stones were a path long before they were anybody. Seven small rounded stones in a line across the low ground of Moss Land, worn smooth by every foot that ever crossed — and somewhere in all those years of being trodden on and counted and hopped along, they woke up. Now, in the daytime, all seven of them wear the same eager grin at the same moment — never seven different faces, always one delight shared seven ways. And at night they do the strangest, softest thing in the whole world. They do not close their eyes. They stop having them. One by one, down the line, the faces simply go out, the way windows go out along a street, until the seventh little grin fades and what is left is what was always there: a path of seven smooth stones, resting, ready to be crossed in the morning.
