Stop 7 on the route

The Sleepy Sea

It breathes. Heard, never arrived at. It goes to sleep when it goes flat and mirrors the Sleepy Lights.

The story of The Sleepy Sea

Here is the strangest and truest thing about the Sleepy Sea: you never quite get there. You hear it — long before the last stop, a low, wide, patient sound past the end of everything — and the whole route walks toward it, and the sound gets closer, and closer… and by the time it would arrive, everyone is asleep. That is not bad luck. Arriving is an event, and events wake people, so the sea keeps itself as a sound on purpose. From the last shore you can see it lying calm and dark all the way to a flat horizon, under the low slow curtains of the Sleepy Lights — and once, if you are luckier than almost anyone, a wide pale shape passing far out beyond the last wave: the Sleep Ray, seen once, never met, gone. The sea goes flat at the very end of the night and mirrors the Lights. It has all the time in the world. It is the place the whole world is walking towards, at the pace of somebody falling asleep.
