Above everything — above the Yawn and the forest and the sea nobody reaches — Earth’s air ends, and the Tardy Universe begins. And here is the wonderful, entirely true thing that makes it his: water bears are the only animals that have ever slept in actual space and been perfectly fine. Real ones. Scientists sent them, space did its worst, and the water bears had a nap. So when Tardy drifts up here among the slow stars, thirty years of sleep to his name and none the worse for it, he is not being brave — he is being a water bear, doing the one thing his kind does better than any creature alive. It is the quietest place that exists. The stars go out one by one, in their own time, and nothing up here has ever once been in a hurry, because nothing up here has anywhere else to be.
