The story of Baba Bear

Baba is Tardy’s father — big, round, moustached, with kind teal-green eyes and a neat purple tie he has worn for so long that nobody, including Baba, remembers why. His method is the oldest sound in the world: the hum. Breathe in, slow and easy — and hum on the way out, low and warm, the breath turned into a sound you can lean against. The books have always had him hum; it is his sound the way the purr belongs to The Cat Nap, a noise a baby can follow long before a baby can follow a sentence. On the very sleepiest evenings he pours two small glasses of Sleep Juice — soft lavender-purple, with a thick creamy top — one for himself, one very small one for company, and then the hum starts, and the big moustache trembles gently with it, and the whole room slows down to the speed of his breathing out. Which was the plan all along.
