The story of Mama Bear

Mama is Tardy’s mother — the same kind of creature as him, much larger and rounder and calmer, with bright green eyes, a dusky pink apron printed with little white flowers, and four arms. Four. Which is to say: she can smooth two blanket corners, hold one small hand and stroke one small head all at the same moment, without hurrying any of them — and once you have been tucked in by somebody with four arms, being tucked in by anybody else feels like half a tuck-in for the rest of your life. Hers ends the same way every night, because bedtimes should: the covers drawn up, a kiss on the forehead, and one verse, hummed low — never quite finished, because by the last line of a properly hummed verse there is nobody awake to hum it to. That is not a trick. That is just Mama, who has never once needed to rush the ending.
