The story of Goodnight Giraffe
Goodnight Giraffe always looks half-asleep — the heavy lids and soft lashes are simply her face — but you never need her face to know how the night is going, because she carries her own clock, and the clock is her neck. Straight up means wide awake. Tipping gently forward means the first yawn has been and gone. Curving low means very sleepy indeed; folding down means the long yawn has happened; and when the night is truly done she lies down and curls that long, patient neck all the way round into a full loop, resting her head on her own back — the deepest, roundest goodnight in the whole world, and the pose real giraffes take for their deepest sleep. She never learned another method because she has never needed one. You can read her from right across a meadow, without a single word being said — and at bedtime, no words is the point.
