The story of Zi Lion

Zi Lion has the loudest moment in the whole world — and that is why he belongs to bedtime. When the song comes round to his verse, Zi Lion growls it: RA-RA-RA, mouth wide, one eye winked, utterly delighted with himself — the biggest, most theatrical noise this quiet world ever allows, placed exactly where it belongs, just before everything goes soft. Because here is Zi’s secret, and the reason the loud verse is safe in his paws: he is a deeply sleepy lion. The grand mane, the big entrance, the roar that is really a song — all of it runs on about four minutes of effort a day, and every roar he has ever roared has ended the same way: sliding, halfway through, into an enormous, slow, irresistible yawn, the biggest in Moss Land, readable from the very back of the meadow. The show ends. The mane settles. The eyes were half-closed the whole time. They always are.
