The story of Griffon Vulture
Griffon Vulture knows what people expect a vulture to be, and he has spent his whole life being cheerfully, completely otherwise. Plump, chocolate-brown and comical, with his splendid white ruff sitting round his neck like a collar on a favourite coat, he is the friendliest bird in the school cast — the one who talks with Tardy, and carries his kite, which tells you everything: the great wings that could ride the wind all day are employed, mostly, in carrying a small friend’s toy. His bedtime gift is the oldest trick a big bird has. He circles. Slowly, high up, round and round in wide unhurried loops — real vultures soar like this for hours, barely beating a wing — and watching him is like watching the biggest, gentlest mobile in the world, until the whole sky seems to be turning at his speed, which is to say: hardly at all. Dry, wry, unhurried. The sky slows down with him. So does everybody under it.
