The story of Lair Bear’s Brother and Sister

Lair Bear’s brother and sister are always already asleep. Not falling asleep, not getting sleepy — asleep, before anybody arrived, side by side in the mindfulness cave with Chief Mindfulness sitting near them. That is how they are drawn in the book art and it is how they have stayed. Their eyes are closed in every picture there is of them, which means everything they feel has to come from the brows and the mouth, the same solution Shut Eye Sam arrived at years ago and for the same reason. They are warm reddish-brown with cream-tan muzzles and chests, small rounded ears, small dark noses, small content smiles. Two arms and two legs each, because they are bears and Lair Bear is a bear. The only way to tell them apart is a small pale lilac clip on top of the sister’s head. That is not an accessory. That is her. They share one sheet, which is unusual and is the honest thing to do: they are peripheral, they only ever appear together, and two full grids for a pair who share one silhouette would be twice the work for the same picture. If either is ever promoted, they get their own. Their method is the quietest one in the whole cast. They do not do anything. They are simply two small breaths keeping time with each other in a warm dark place, and a room with two people already asleep in it is a very hard room to stay awake in.
