The story of Shut Eye Sam
Shut Eye Sam is a dream who wandered in and stayed. He is a boy made of soft silver-grey light — gently glowing, weightless, never quite solid — and his eyes have been closed for as long as anyone has known him. Not squeezed shut. Restfully shut, with a small content smile underneath, because Sam is always at least half asleep and entirely happy about it. Ask him why he never opens them and he will tell you, in his whisper, the most sensible thing anyone in this world has ever said: everything nice happens in dreams, so why would he look anywhere else? He drifts about the Sleepy Waterfall like a piece of moonlight that got comfortable, and his technique — the Sleepeasy — is the gentlest one there is: a soft touch, a hand smoothed over a brow, the kind of goodnight you can feel with your eyes already closed. Which, if you are Sam, they always, always are.
