The story of X-Ray Fish

X-Ray Fish is the nightlight of the Snoozy Stream. She glows — not with a lamp, not with a trick, but from inside herself: her fins and wide fan tail shine in soft drifting colours, and along her middle runs a neat row of little curved lines glowing warm gold, like the frame of a tiny paper lantern. Low on her face sits the family snout, and hers is the finest in the whole world: nine little round lamps set in a ring, every one a different colour, glowing softly in the dark water. And here is her secret, which is true of real fish everywhere and funnier on her: she sleeps with her eyes open. Fish have no eyelids at all. So on the darkest stretch of the stream, when everything else has closed and gone, X-Ray Fish hangs perfectly still in the black water, lit up like a tiny lantern, wide-eyed and fast asleep — the light the stream leaves on all night.
